What Is A Water Trail?

By definition, a water trail is a route along a river or across other bodies of water such as fresh or salt water for people using human powered beachable boats like kayaks, canoes, or rowboats.  Water trails are most often identified by the land facilities that support water travel.  These include launch and landing sites (we call these trailheads), campsites, rest areas and other points of interest.  On land, trails have distinct surfaces or walkways; on water it's the entire water surface, a surface that is constantly changing with flow, current, boat wakes and wind

The Connecticut Water Trail Program wants to provide a clear voice for small human powered - boater's rights and lend a helping hand to preserve access to Connecticut's waters for future generations.

The greatest benefit of membership is knowing that by willing to volunteer your time you are helping to protect Connecticut’s Water Trails. You will also get quarterly newsletters as well as being regularly updated on upcoming events via email. What Are The Obligations Of Connecticut Water Trails Program Membership?

Members are encouraged to follow the Leave No Trace Guidelines, as well as any water trail specific instructions detailed on the Leave No Trace page. This is especially important when visiting water trails, which may have special restrictions stipulated by the owner. While members are encouraged to participate in Connecticut Water Trails Program stewardship activities, these programs are voluntary and are not a requirement of membership.
