Site Description:

Nestled between Long Island Sound and the Great Meadows tidal wetlands, Long Beach is one of the longest barrier beaches in Connecticut--a little over a mile long. Walk along the shore to enjoy the dunes and tidal wetlands sheltered by this barrier beach. However, because of security concerns associated with abandoned residential structures on the far western portion of the beach (Long Beach West), this section of the beach is currently closed to visitors. Signs in the beach parking lot regarding beach access restrictions apply only to Long Beach West. The public may walk from the parking lot along the beach upto but not including the restricted area. Many species of waterfowl can be spotted here. Please be aware that the piping plover, a threatened species of shore bird, nests in throughout the summer on the western part of this beach near Pleasure Beach. Please stay on the trail when walking in this area to avoid disturbing this rare and beautiful bird . Fishing is permitted outside designated swimming areas. If you intend to visit during hunting season, proper precautions should be taken as hunting is allowed in the Great Meadows salt marsh. To help you reach Long Beach, some routes leading to this site are posted with the brown and white Long Island Sound Access sign
