Site History:

Tom Thumb and the Thimble Islands

The 19th-century ties to the Thimble Islands are legendary. "General" Tom Thumb's courtship of the diminutive "Emily" on Cut-in-Two Island was discouraged by the powerful P.T. Barnum. Barnum had been arranging Stratton's alliance with the highly educated and entertaining Lavinia Warren, a far more appropriate European ambassador for the Greatest Show on Earth.

The cottage was once wallpapered with circus posters which, a century later, were said to be worth more than the cottage itself.
