On The Water:

Once you are below the dam – the main channel – not the canal should be used. Land on the left shore juts above the lock, lift your boat into the canal, and paddle down to the lower lock – don’t get too close because of strong currents. The lift back into the river is down a steep bank on the left side, below the factory.

Reenter the river 1 mile above the I-91 bridge. The remaining paddle is fairly easy going.

The Scantic River enters the Connecticut River three miles down on the right, 2 miles further down is Windsor. Here the Farmington River enters on the right.

In another 4 miles the Podunk River enters on the left.

In Hartford, Riverside Park is a great access point to take a break Travel down 3 more miles to where the Charter Oak Bridge is as well as where the Hockanum River on the left.

In another 2.5 miles the Wethersfield Cove opens up on the right under the I-95 Bridge. Head for the Wethersfield Cove Boat Launch.

On The Water:

Even though the lower sections of the river are tidal – you won’t feel the effects until you get near Middletown. In the 7 mile trip to Rocky Hill, the river meanders.  Just above Rocky Hill is Halls Landing Marina.

For the next 8 miles to Middletown you’ll see Gildersleeve Island ( where you can camp) - about 5 miles down, or you can stop at Riverside Marine Park for a break.

The best place to take out is Harbor Park in Middletown.

On The Water:

Below Middletown, the nature of the river changes. The river deepens and widens. This section of the river can be paddle any time as long as it is clear of ice. This section of the river is part of the Connecticut River Gateway.

You can paddle the river the entire way or explore side areas as you head down. These side areas can be found along the east side of the river in East Haddam, Lyme, and Old Lyme.

The side trails along the east side of the river begin below the Route 82 Bridge ( at 13.75 miles)

Keep to the left of Rich Island at 14.5 miles – and enter Chapman Pond from the west end – at low tide the south side is difficult to paddle.

The next side trail begins below the ferry crossing and extends to the east of Selden Neck at 17.25 miles – through Selden Cove and Selden Creek.
