W Latitude: 41.44294 N On The Water: You will notice at the put-in and through most of your paddle that the river is shallow in this section. You'll have to keep your eyes open for rocks as you head down the river. The first stretch of the river is a mixture of flatwater and ripples. Your first major are the remains of Swift's Bridge which are still in the river. You may have to lift your boat over the remaining ledge when river levels are low. Your best bet is to approach these remains towards the center. You may want to pull out and scout the area before attempting to go over the ledge. You can also use this spot for a put-in. After about a 1/2 mile down from Swift's Bridge the river it takes a turn to the right where you'll encounter a rapid with a large wave. You should avoid this and keep to your right. You'll notice and be able to see that the Appalachian Trail starts to follow the river for the next 4 miles - 2 1/2 miles into your paddle. If you want, over this four mile stretch there are areas that you can pull out and take a break. Your paddle along this stretch is mostly flatwater. Also at this point in the trip you should stay close to the right bank. If you designated the fishing spot as your take out point at 8.5 miles in keep your eyes on the right bank for your vehicle. At 9 miles into the trip you'll see signs of civilization again. You will also hit the longest and most difficult stretch of the river after you pass a large island and hit rapids. You may hit a few rocks and it can be tricky in high water. After the rapids you'll hit a section of calm water which continues right to the take out. Once the Route 341 Bridge comes into view - you're at the end of your trip - the take out is right before the bridge on the right.
