On The Water:

Since you're launching right at the dam the only choice is to head upstream. The current is usually negligible. About 4-5 miles to the north is the abandoned Canaan Dam. You may have to fight the current to reach it, but there is a short portage to the east side of the dam. It is up and down a steep bank. North of the dam you can paddle all the way to Massachusetts. There is a pair of bridges (road & railroad) in Ashley Falls, MA where you can park a car beside the road and have access to the river. This can be a spectacular paddle during Fall foliage season.

Cautions:

Stay away from the far side of the dam at the put-in. That is where the power plant water intakes are. Always portage around the dam at Canaan.
