On The Water:

The brook starts near South Sandisfield, Massachusetts and flows southeasterly into Connecticut. Before the Connecticut Route 8 Bridge this is a great section of whitewater. After the bridge the rapids are moderate. Since it is not fed by a lake or reservoir – the brook is rarely runnable.

To reach the put in – turn west off of Connecticut Route 8 onto Sandy Brook Road. Follow the road – which follows and crosses the river several times – which helps allow for scouting out the route – along with various put in and take out points. 4 miles up you’ll hit Campbell Road.

You’ll hit rapids immediately along with a couple of small ledge drops followed by a 4 foot ledge – best paddled in the center – scout this drop out before attempting.

This is followed by Block rapid where a series of ledges and large holes with a tight drop around either side of a rock outcropping which needs to be scouted out.

At ¾ of a mile down ( Mountain Road & Sandy Brook Road) there is a bridge which offers a put in – if you want to avoid the section just talked about. This section is steep, narrow, and has Class IV rapids. Watch out for fallen trees. Scout out all rapids – because of large rocks, tight turns, and steep descents. This run leads up to a Class V highwater section. Take out at Riverton Road & Connecticut Route 8, Colebrook

Cautions:

Watch out for fallen trees – scout out each section.
