On The Water:

This is a small whitewater river. You’ll encounter a lot of small broken dams – which can create a hazard during high water and require scouting out.. At lower water levels it’s Class II – III.

Put in below the mill dam in Mill River on Hayes Hill Road just off of Massachusetts Route 57. A ½ mile downstream is a washed out dam with Class III rapids at low flow  and Class IV at high water flow. Scout out this section on the left side. The best paddle is over the left center over an exposed ledge.

There is a water fall ¼ mile after the second bridge (Umpachene Falls). Watch out for the fence going across the r5iver at ½ mile after the falls  - not a problem during a low to medium flow. Stay to the left – watch out for strainers as you paddle along.

Take out at a small sandy beach on the right hand side just after Konkapot Road bridge off Canaan Southfield Rd, Southfield.
