Connecticut Water Trails Program Paddling Trails New London County Groton Esker Point to Fishers Island
Esker Point Groton, Connecticut to West Harbor Fishers Island, NY
USGS Quadrangle:
Type of Water: Paddle Length: USGS Real Time Water Data / Gauge: Portage: NA The most common launch site is Esker Point Beach. A small carry in boat launch located off the parking lot across from the beach, behind the Fisherman restaurant, gives access to Palmer’s Cove. Cross under the bridge. You can also park and then carry your boats across the road to launch from the beach. Put In One: Esker Point BeachGoogle Map
Take Out: Same As Above On The Water: Follow the coast of Groton Long Point for about a mile. From the end of Groton Long Point Fishers Island and the Dumpling Islands are clearly visible.
1.5 miles from the end of Groton Long Point, is a private island owned by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway. The main house is located in the refurbished 1847 lighthouse. A power-generating windmill and Stonehnge like structure are also visible.
South Dumpling Island The 2.6 acre South Dumpling Island is owned by the Avalonia Land Conservancy. Public access is permitted but it is probably not advisable as the island supports nesting colonies of Egrets, Herons, Cormorant, Gulls, and American Oystercatchers. Looking at the island from just off shore it appears that nearly every branch contains a nest. Flat Hammock Landing is also possible at the tiny Flat Hammock which is little more then a gravel bar that nearly disappears at high tide. Fishers Island Landing A small public boat launch is located in the extreme Southeast end of West Harbor past all the marinas. There is little room for storing boats and no facilities. To reach the town center take a right from the boat launch onto Peninsula Road and a left on Oriental Ave. Your reach the town in approximately 1.5 miles.
Cautions: Heavy Boat Traffic
Despite being located approximately two miles off the Connecticut coast (Groton Long Point – Clay Point) it is actually part of New York State. Connecticut and New York argued over ownership of the island for over 200 years before the issue was settled in 1879 with New York the winner. Despite it’s roots as an agricultural island, it is now better known as a summer residence for the wealthy. The year round population of less then 300 swells to 3000 in the summer season. Most of the island is private and the natives like it that way. The small town center contains two churches, a post office, a library, a gift shop, a ice cream shop, and a coffee shop/deli. More dining is available at the Pequot Inn or the golf courses. If you are not a guest of one of the residents there is little reason to visit the island.
