You can paddle the river from Plainville to New Haven Harbor.

The section of the river from Quinnipiac Ave to Toelles Road may be difficult to paddle due to blockages- mostly downstream.

Type of Water: Tidal

Paddle Length: 6 miles

Google Map

Longitude:  72.90360609999999 W Latitude: 41.3025925 N

On The Water:

The river here turns into an estuary with slow moving deep water which is affected by the tides. High tide here follows high tide in New Haven Harbor by 2 hours. You should put in an hour before high tide.

Much of this area is state owned Quinnipiac Meadows Wildlife Area.

Cautions:

Be aware of tides - because this section of the river is affected by them.

Where the river becomes constricted at the Middletown Ave Bridge - the current is fast and dangerous, with turbulence by the pilings. It's safest to paddle here during slack tide.
