On The Water:
The stretch from Mill Street to West Main Street,
about one mile, is shallow and narrow. Eight Mile River enters into the
Quinnipiac River below West Main Street. The river meanders about 3
miles until it reaches Plants Dam. Portage around the dam is on the
left. Below the dam the river passes under Connecticut Route 10 and
enters a series of curves. You can follow the river from here until it
joins with the Ten Mile River and then flows slowly to the Connecticut
322 bridge.
Cautions: Use caution when approaching the 4 foot dam.

On The Water:
From Route 322 the paddling down river is easy but
there may be blockages along the way with a few quick turns in the river
– especially during high and low water levels. Between Carpenter’s Dam and Red Bridge, about 4.5
miles, there is a small stretch of Class I water. Hanover Pond is
shallow.
Cautions: There may be blockages along the way with a few
quick turns in the river – especially during high and low water levels.

On The Water:
Put in at Donna Beach on Hanover Pond. There is a
steep portage on the right hand side around the Hanover Pond Dam. Then
it’s an easy going 2 ½ to 3 hour trip to the old dam at Britannia Spoon
Company. This dam was breeched in 1997 – the portage around it is on the
right. Stay to the right while traveling towards this dam – it’s
difficult to see until you’re right on top of it. The Connecticut Route
68 Bridge is a half mile below this dam.
Cautions: Stay to the right while
traveling towards the Britannia Spoon Company dam – it’s difficult to
see until you’re right on top of it.

W Latitude: 41.429532
N On The Water: Here the river moves a little bit slower. A short distance downstream of
Connecticut Route 68 the river flows around a large island. Stay to the
lefty – the river may become too shallow to paddle and you may have to
carry your boat over some sandbars.
Cautions: The section of the river from
Quinnipiac Ave to Toelles Road may be difficult to paddle due to
blockages- mostly downstream.

the next three miles to Banton Street you may run into downed trees and
logjams which require you to portage. The Red Sandstone Railway Bridge is passable during
high tide along the right hand side. At low tide be very cautious –
because there are bricks and pilings on the river bottom. The river
widens at Sackett Point Road.
Cautions: The Red Sandstone Railway Bridge is passable during
high tide along the right hand side. At low tide be very cautious –
because there are bricks and pilings on the river bottom.
