Men may dam it and say that they have made a lake, but it will still be a river. It will keep its nature and bide its time, like a caged animal alert for the slightest opening. In time, it will have its way; the dam, like the ancient cliffs, will be carried away piecemeal in the currents.

On The Water:

This is the best section of the river as it runs through the Quinebaug Watershed. An easy put in is below the Quaddick Road bridge – south of the Quaddick Reservoirin a small dirt parking lot next to a small hydro power plant.

There are riffles and Class I water for the next 300 yards after this point – with a large metal mill remnant as an obstruction in the center of the river. The river enters into a 20 acre pond (Lower Pond) and then continues south through a white cedar swamp.

At 1 mile before Munyan Road, Putnam there is a short Class II drop which can be paddled by experienced paddlers in medium to high water levels. It’s best to portage the water on the right for the next 20 yards.

Below Munyan Road there are no portages or rapids until the take out in Pineville. The next 5 miles of river has some shallow spots if the water isn’t high enough.

There’s another good put in / take out point at a roadside park along Connecticut Route 44 at 2.3 miles. This is also a good spot to check water levels – if the surface water is 25 inches or less below where the curved sides of the bridge straighten out – then there enough water to paddle.

After Connecticut Route 44 the river continues until Five Mile River road which is a good access point at 2.65 miles in or there is another good access point at Chase Road – 5.65 miles in. From Chase Road, the last mile to Pineville Dam. There are easy take outs above the dam – but should be scouted beforehand to avoid trespassing on private property.

On The Water:

The easy going water ends at the Pineville Dam and does not return until North Street bridge in Danielson. Between these two points there is 6 miles of Class II water as well as portages over low dams and unrunnable ledges. You’ll paddle through Ballouville Pond an the Ballouville Pond Dam to portage around.

From North Street bridge on there’s 2 miles of flatwater and lake before the river merges with the Quinebaug River. Take out at Water Street.

On The Water:

You can put in at the picnic area on Tucker Road off of Highway 44. There is very little parking at the site – so large groups need to make plans to park somewhere else and shuttle. The current flowing through this section of the river is very easy going.

The first half mile section of the river is winding with a few sharp turns. When you come you come to Five Mile River Road Bridge you’ll have to take out and portage around it on the left bank because the bridge is too low to pass under. This portage is across private property so please be respectful.

In about a mile you’ll pass through rural countryside. You will be paddling parallel to Chase Road and will eventually see the Chase Road Bridge which you can paddle under.

After Chase Road Bridge you’ll be paddling 1 ½ miles of winding river with many sharp turns. You’ll eventually come up to Stone Road Bridge which you can paddle under. Here the water will slow down and the river widens as you approach Warsaw Pond.

After you pass under the next bridge you have about 1,000 feet to the take out, you’ll be traveling parallel to River Road as you approach the Warsaw Pond Dam. The take out is on the right hand side of the dam right before Putnam Road.

Cautions: Watch out for the occasional beaver dam.
