On The Water: Start at the Rhode Island Route 14 bridge near
Fairbanks Corner. From here the river flows 5.75 miles to Oneco.
In Oneco you’ll hit a dam which needs to be portaged on the left side
before the Connecticut Route 14 Bridge. You’ll have to cross the bridge
and put in at the mill on the right. Then it’s a 2.1 mile paddle with
riffles to the dam at Sterling – where you’ll have to portage on the far
right near the mill for 100 yards along Connecticut Route 14 to the Main
Street bridge. Another 3 miles down you’ll come to a dam at
Almyville – 200 yards after another Connecticut Route 14
bridge. The impoundment of this dam is easy to access from
Snake Meadow Brook at North
Sterling Road, Plainfield. You’ll have to portage this dam on the
left side working your way around the mill buildings. The next dam .3
miles ahead is any easy portage on the right. The river runs fast for the next mile to another
broken dam at Moosup – which requires whitewater experience to paddle –
otherwise take out on the left and portage. The next dam at
Moosup is a low dam and an easy portage. The river goes through the dry bed of a pond to a 1
foot drop located at the site of the old dam. This is an easy portage.
Right after I-395 there is a short portage over the left side of another
low dam which is followed 150 yards down by another low dam right before
the Connecticut Route 12 bridge. At Central Village there is a large
1 foot drop at the railroad bridge to run or lift over. The remains of
an old dam follow 50 yards ahead which can be run. Take out here at the
ball field off of School Street or at the Connecticut Route 14 bridge
further up at the School Street Extension. Beyond the bridge it’s 1.75 miles to the
Quinebaug River and then 4 miles of easy going water to the next
take out point at the Connecticut Route 14 bridge in Canterbury.
