"Rivers run through our history and folklore, and link us as a people. They nourish and refresh us and provide a home for dazzling varieties of fish and wildlife and trees and plants of every sort. We are a nation rich in rivers."

- Charles Kuralt

The Rivers Of Connecticut

Connecticut is made up of numerous and diverse rivers. They meander through the mountains and landscapes, through the valleys, to the shores of Connecticut lending to them an ethereal, enchanting and captivating beauty.

Connecticut’s rivers are glaring examples of the delicate aquatic ecological balance found in water ecosystems. Many of them flow into estuaries which serve as the breeding ground for fish. The swampy lands found along the side of the rivers serve as the rendezvous for many migratory birds. The marshy lands formed due to tides by the rivers in Connecticut are inhabited by endangered species. A plethora of flora and fauna flourish in our rivers.

Some of our rivers are currently facing the problems of water pollution and erosion. In the past they were used for industry and some still suffer from its side effects, some were and still are used for transportation, and dams were constructed across many of them to generate electricity which also caused their own unique set of problems.

We must never forget that the rivers in Connecticut are our assets which bespeak of the awe inspiring beauty of Mother Nature and its assorted utilities.
