How To Write Letters To Congress

Sample Letters

Sample Letter Raising A Concern

The Honorable John Jones

Legislative Office Building

Hartford CT 06106

Dear Senator Jones:

I am writing to alert you to a serious health issue in Connecticut. Alarming numbers of people in Connecticut are being infected with Norwalk Virus. This disease is the most common viruses transmitted  in drinking water in the United States.

Unfortunately, drinking water testing rates are far too low. Connecticut must increase educational outreach and testing resources to improve those numbers.

As the legislature’s premier champion of public health, I know that you will see that this issue is addressed in our state’s public policy. If I can be of any assistance, please call me. Thank you for your time and your commitment to the health of all Connecticut citizens.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter Opposing A Proposal

The Honorable John Jones

Legislative Office Building

Hartford CT 06106

Dear Senator Jones:

As one of your constituents, I was very concerned to learn that the General Assembly is considering a bill to reduce eligibility for the HUSKY program.

Since its inception in 1997, HUSKY has provided hundreds of thousands of low-income children, their parents and caregivers with affordable access to quality health care services. Access to preventive services, in particular, is critical to healthy development for children and has undoubtedly reduced the need for expensive treatments for more serious illnesses. While I understand the state is facing a reduction in revenues, as a resident of the wealthiest state in the US, I believe we, in Connecticut, can afford to continue to serve this basic human need. I also believe that most Connecticut residents would agree.

You have always been a champion of children’s health; if I can be of any assistance, please call me. Thank you for your time and your commitment to the health of all Connecticut citizens.

Sincerely,

Susan Voter

Sample Letter Supporting A Proposal

The Honorable John Jones

Legislative Office Building

Hartford CT 06106

Dear Senator Jones:

I was pleased to learn that the General Assembly is considering a bill to expand access to smoking cessation treatment for Medicaid recipients. As one of your constituents, I urge you to support it.

I was a smoker for twenty years and know firsthand how difficult it is to quit. I tried three times before I was successful, and then only with the assistance of medication and treatment.

While this proposal will have some upfront costs to the state Medicaid program, the eventual return in improved health and reduced health care expenses for illnesses caused by smoking will far exceed the small initial cost. This is a wise investment of my tax dollars.

If I can be of any assistance, please call me. Thank you for your time and your commitment to the health of all Connecticut citizens.

Sincerely,
