The Basics

The Five D's - Designations

Places and other map features are designated by name in various different styles of lettering.  Here is a list of the ones used on topographic maps.

Regular Roman (Upright) - (like the lettering you are reading now) is used for places, boundary lines,  and area names.

Italics (Slanted) letters are used on hydrographic / water features.

Block Letters are used for hypsographic names / elevation features.

Slanted Block Letters are used for names of public works and descriptive notes.

Designating An Unmarked Location

There will be many times you will want to indicate a location on a map which has no designated name. The simplest way to work around this is to make use of a place name that is closest to the location you are referring to.
