Basic Information:

Located less than 30 miles from Hartford, 446-acre Lake McDonough is one of Connecticut's gems. A scenic, unspoiled public recreation area offering numerous ways to enjoy the beauty of New England - every season of the year. With wheelchair accessibility to beaches, bathhouses, the boathouse and picnic areas - as well as a fully accessible nature trail for the disabled and the blind - Lake McDonough is truly for everyone.

Driving Directions:

From Route 8 in Winsted: Head east on Route 44 for 3.2 miles then turn left - heading east on Route 318. Follow Route 318 for 3 miles and the turn right heading south onto Route 219. Drive .6 miles to the Lake McDonough Recreation Area on the right.

From I-91: Get off at Exit 40 and head west on Route 20 for 12.7 miles and then turn left - heading south onto Route 219. Drive 6.9 miles to the access on the right - .6 miles past the junction with Route 318.

On The Water: The paddle on this lake will give you a real work out. The northwest section of the lake is the best.  The larger section of the lake which goes to the south end has a few islands.
