Site Location:    West Road, Winchester, Connecticut

Basic Information:

A beautiful, quiet lake, about a mile long, with lots of side coves and a couple of small islands and only a couple of houses. The lake is artificial in origin, being formed by an earthen and masonry dam on the headwaters of the East Branch of the Naugatuck River. The lake is fed by several small streams.

Driving Directions:

Route 8 north from Waterbury to the last exit in Winsted. At the end of the exit turn right onto Route 8 then turn left onto Route 44 West. After about 1 mile turn left onto Route 263 which takes you to Winchester Center. Stay on Route 263 through Winchester Center, then Bear right onto West Road which takes you to the boat launch. There is plenty of parking at the boat launch.

On The Water:

From the boat launch paddle along the western shore you can explore several coves. As you paddle around this magnificent lake please be aware of the numerous submerged tree stumps and rocks that populate the lake.

There is a nice little island on the western side which is a great place to pull out and stop for lunch. You can probably paddle around this lake in about 2-3 hours.
