Paddling The Hammonasset River:

Put in is right below the I-95 overpass. Again watch the tides the river gets a little shallow here at low tide. Put in just before the 3 hours after low tide and come back on a high incoming tide which makes paddling easier. The river takes you through some great sights of Ospreys and their nest. Some nice Stripped Bass that were chasing bait fish up the river. Red Winged Black birds, Hermit Crabs, eels, and a large snapping turtle that was enjoying itself catching bait fish for a dinner.

You can paddle down as far as the mouth of the river to Long Island Sound. Beware and stay away from the main channel. Take some time to paddle the small tributaries and do some exploring. This is where you will find nature at it best.

The paddle back is easy with the incoming tide. There are a few spots along this river that you can exit your kayak and walk along the marsh and take a rest and explore also.
