Site History:

What’s the biggest island in the Connecticut River? What Connecticut state park is accessible only by water? Where was granite quarried to pave the streets of New York and Philadelphia?

The answer? Selden Neck, located between Deep River and Lyme, about 12 miles north of the mouth of the Connecticut River.

In reality, “Neck” is a misnomer, since the 610-acre state park has been an island since 1854, when a spring freshet cut its north end off from the mainland. But the island’s official name has never been changed to reflect geographical reality.
