Paddling Fishers Island Sound:

The best put-in for this area is at a preserve called Barn Island. There is a boat launch and dock, which are crowded when you would expect them to be, but never so bad that you can't throw a kayak or canoe in. From here you have a wide range of destinations. Calm touring in Stonington Harbor, about .75 mi. to the west, and Watch Hill Harbor, about 1 mi. to the southeast. Surfing on Napatree, about 2 mi. due south and Misquamicut beaches, about a three+ mile paddle south, and then east. Another, more advanced, touring destination is Fishers Island. This is an inhabited island, 7 miles long, which is part of NY State. There is no camping but there are places to pull out and have lunch. This island is about 3.5 miles SSW of the put-in. Sandy Point (1 mile due south) is a bird sanctuary which is a great place to have lunch with plenty of calm shallow and clean water to practice skills.
