Planning A Paddling Trip

General Planning: The Gear List

This is the next step after you have planned out your paddling trip.

Construct A Written Gear List

Begin the process by preparing a written gear list for the type of paddling trip you are going on.

One that includes all of the items you'll need for a day paddling trip, or a kayak camping/overnight trip.

This written list will come in handy

  • Before your trip (to make sure you've packed everything)

  • During your trip (to remember what you brought)

  • And after your trip (to make sure you didn't leave anything behind).

Creating a complete gear list from scratch can be a difficult task.

  • Talk with experienced local paddlers to help you develop your list.

  • After a few trips, you'll be able to customize this general list as you go on more paddling trips and the specific gear you like to have on board.

Check Equipment Condition And Operation

  • Check all of your gear before packing it.

  • Make sure all the participants on the trip do the same

  • Make sure that you know how to assemble/use it correctly, that it's in good physical condition and that it works correctly.

  • Pay special attention to important items like water filters, stoves and tents.

  • Have an equipment shakedown at least one week before the trip.

Double-Check The Essentials

  • Many a cold, dark, hungry night has been spent in the wilderness because someone forgot to check the batteries in their flashlight, the fuel levels in their fuel bottles or the matches in their pocket.

  • Or their NOAA radio and safety beacon did not work because the batteries were dead

  • To avoid such problems, include a list of specific "Essentials Checks" at the bottom of your written gear list to be performed just before leaving home.

Paddling Overnights - Learn To Share

  • Many paddling camping trips involve more than one boat. With a little bit of cooperation and extra planning, you can save space, weight and effort by identifying community gear items that can be shared among group members.

  • Sharing equipment lightens everyone's load.

  • Typical community items include cooking stoves, pots and pans, lanterns and water purification systems.

  • This should all be worked out at a pre-trip meeting.
