The Weantinock

 

 

Location

 

The Weantinock are a tribe that existed during and prior to colonial times in Western Connecticut (between the Housatonic and Connecticut River Valleys), eventually amalgamating with Potatuck (Pootatuck) and other indigenous people to form Schaghticoke in Western Connecticut.

 

Name Origin

 

Language Spoken

 

Algonquin. R-dialect. All of the Mattabesic tribes spoke a common language which has been called either Quiripi or Wampano. It is identical to the dialect spoken by the Metoac tribes of central Long Island and the Wappinger on the east side of the lower Hudson River.
