Different Styles Of Kayaks - Sit On Top Kayak

Sit-on-top Kayaks - designed so the kayaker sits on top of the boat and the body is not enclosed. Less stable than other kayaks, they are easier to fall out of, but also easy to climb back on. Designed for both paddling and surfing, they come in one-seater and multiple-seater.

A Sit On Top Kayak is ideal for a beginner or youth size paddler. They are really fun and easy to use. There's little to think about here - a Sit On Top is simply an open hull that, as the name indicates . . . you sit on top of!

They are easy to keep upright because they have a wider beam. This extra width makes them more stable. If they do flip they will upright easily because they are usually a rotomolded type, that is - no enclosed cockpit. This type is easier for youths to handle and they're great for fishing. It's wider width will need a longer paddle.

Sit On Tops are manufactured in solo or tandem designs. Some designs have bulkheads built in for storage. They are typically manufactured in plastic (rotomolded) or fiberglass which makes them very low maintenance, light weight and durable. Because they are so durable, you'll often see these as rentals at beach, camp or touring resorts.

Sit-on-tops are deckless kayaks that appeal to those who find sitting inside their craft rather claustrophobic. On Sit-On-Top s, paddlers and passengers are exposed to waves and weather, so in cooler conditions, people must dress carefully. The deck-free design means that some models can accommodate up to three people.

Sit-On-Top s provide short, wide, stable platforms that are fun for family paddling, including first-timers and kids, in sheltered waters. Some models are designed for playing in surf. Cargo is usually strapped into molded wells, protected inside drybags or waterproof boxes where necessary. Some Sit-On-Tops have cargo hatches, but these have a smaller capacity than sea kayaks or day trippers.

If you're looking for kayaks that are easy to use, then you should probably look into getting sit-on-top kayaks. These kayaks are designed so that you don't have to worry about spray skirts, instead you just sit on top of the kayak seat and you're ready to go. These kayaks are ideal for beginners, children, or for people who just want a recreational kayak that's easy to use.

Another benefit of sit-on-top kayaks is that they are very easy to keep upright. Usually these kayaks are designed to be a bit broader than regular kayaks. The result of this is that there is more base to the kayak - which means that it's much harder for them to tip over. The other benefit of the sit-on-top kayaks is that even if they do flip over, it is not nearly such a big deal as it might be if you had that problem in a regular kayak.

This is due to the fact that if your sit-on-top kayak flips, all you have to do is flip it back over and climb back on top. This is not a very big deal, and anybody can do it. On the other hand, in kayaks that have spray skirts and that you sit inside of, it is possible that flipping over can be very serious. In any case, you have to spend a lot of time learning to right yourself. Since children often have trouble with this, you can see why sit-on-top kayaks are preferred.

The other benefit is that there are a lot of tandem sit-on-top kayaks sold. This is because while it is harder to control a kayak that has two people in it, sit-on-top kayaks do not have that problem - even if the kayak does tip, it's no big deal!

You can even get sit-on-top kayaks with bulkheads inside of the kayak just in case you would like to take the boat on a kayak tour. These kayaks are great for beginners, and make very good recreational or touring boats.

Sit-On-Top s are not usually used for overnight or touring trips in cooler climes. Most Sit-On-Top s are hardshell plastic boats, though there are a few folding models.
