Connecticut Water Trails Program Kayaking Basics
Different Styles Of Kayaks -
Surf Skis - Wave Skis
Surf skis / wave skis are both fun and interesting as far as new kayak designs go. These very small kayaks are designed for surfing instead of kayaking, and as a result, are very small and highly maneuverable. These kayaks are also designed to be sit-on-top kayaks since the surf could be highly dangerous to somebody in a regular kayak. If you're thinking about buying surf skis / wave skis, you should also look into getting surf kayaks, since that is the other name that is generally used to refer to these boats.
Surf skis / wave skis are also designed so that
you'll be able to do pretty much any trick that you would ever want to
do. For instance, people have been able to easily do aerial tricks in
these kayaks as well as plenty of other tricks. As far as size, surf skis / wave skis are generally
less than 9 feet long, and some are even as short as 7 feet. As you
might be able to guess, these are some of the smallest kayaks on the
market. While they are not used for the same activity, they are most
closely related to whitewater play boats rather than regular
recreational kayaks. However, some of these small kayaks have a little
more trouble getting out to the surf and on top of the waves. This is
the general trade off for being able to do all the tricks that you'll be
able to do in the surf skis / wave skis. One thing you should consider, however, is that you
should only really look into buying surf kayaks or surf skis / wave skis
if you are already very experienced at kayaking. The reason for this is
that these kayaks are not nearly as stable or easy to use as regular
kayaks. Therefore, unless you have a lot of experience, you could end up
in a bad position. Considering that you will also be kayaking right up
into the surf, you definitely want to make sure that you are in complete
control of your kayak - otherwise you might get pounded by the waves. If you're looking for a new kayaking activity that is similar to surfing, however, you should look into using surf skis or wave skis to catch a wave. Have fun!
