Different Styles Of Kayaks - Touring Kayak
Years ago, any boat described as a touring kayak was
probably just that – a boat intended for overnight or multi-day trips.
Recently, the term touring kayak seems to have become a default
catch-all description for any kayak not specifically designed for
whitewater river use.
Touring Kayaks
- long and stable, these boats are good for extended trips. They track
well in a straight line, but are harder to turn than shorter boats.
Varying models have more of less capacity to store gear. For day trips,
you may want to choose a lighter touring boat with less storage and more
maneuverability. If you're planning on going on long distance kayaking trips, then you
should probably look into touring kayaks. There are several different
types of touring kayaks, so depending on the type of kayak tour you're
thinking of going on, there are different choices for you.
The other type of touring kayak is a multi-day trip
kayak. These are designed so that you can take them on longer kayaking
trips. Depending on the type of trip you're planning on going on,
however, there are different sizes of multi-day trip kayaks. These
touring kayaks are also sometimes referred to as "sea kayaks" since most
people who are going on long kayak tours will be going out to sea. These kayaks tend to be larger and built to be more
sturdy than regular recreational kayaks. As a result, they are easier to
use if you are out at sea, and are less likely to capsize in adverse
weather conditions. Most of these multi-day trip kayaks also have added
features which make them easier to maneuver if you're in rougher seas.
For instance, most have skegs and rudders, which will make it easier for
you to go where you want to instead of where the sea wants to take you. Most touring kayaks, especially the multi-day trip
kayaks, have large bulkheads where you can store camping equipment,
food, or extra clothing. One thing that you should check before you buy
a kayak is that the bulkhead will be large enough for you to fit
everything you need to bring with you. You should also make sure that
you keep track of how much weight you'll be adding to it - the last
thing you want to do is drag your kayak down in the water with heavy
equipment. Most camping gear stores sell lightweight equipment, however,
so this should not be too much of a problem. Most touring kayaks are made out of plastic or fiberglass. This is so that the kayak shell will be able to take a pounding from the waves without springing a leak or capsizing. Therefore, if you are looking into getting a touring kayak, you should plan on buying a plastic or fiberglass kayak. You should also consider how long your trip is going to last, as well, since the longer it will be and the rougher the water you'll be traveling over, the larger size kayak you should be looking at.
The Day Touring
Is
usually 12-16 ft long. Usually shorter and lighter than regular touring
kayaks. Easy to maneuver and transport. You have less room for gear than
larger boats.
Light Touring Kayaks
This type of kayak is a good beginners choice because of the
versatility. They're designed a bit larger to accommodate more gear than
other recreational types - they're great for day-trips or longer
excursions. This type is also a little less expensive.
The Multi-Day Kayak
Often called sea kayaks, these boats are long
(usually 15 to 18 feet), and narrow (21 to 24 inches). Boats designed
for two are typically 17 to 22 feet long and about 26 to 30 inches wide.
These dimensions allow them to track (move in a straight line)
efficiently through open waters. Is
designed for long trips and large gear loads. It is easy to paddle,
comfortable with plenty of room. It has a sleek design to move
efficiently through the water.
Many sea kayaks are equipped with rudders or skegs
to improve tracking. They have relatively low decks to minimize wind
drag and allow a paddler to lock their knees tightly against the
underside to help control the boat. These kayaks are designed to hold
enough cargo for multi-day trips.
