How To Choose A PFD - Taking Care Of Your PFD

Caring For Your Lifejacket

Like all safety equipment, lifejackets require regular maintenance and servicing. Proper care can help you prolong the life of your lifejacket. If at any time you have questions regarding the condition of your lifejacket, take it to your nearest dealer, or call the manufacturer.

Taking Care Of Your PFD

Follow these tips to ensure your PFD stays in good condition:

  • Don't alter your PFD. If yours doesn't fit, get one that does. An altered PFD may not save your life.

  • Don't put heavy objects on your PFD or use it for a kneeling pad or boat fender.

  • PFD ‘s lose buoyancy when crushed.

  • Let your PFD drip dry thoroughly before putting it away. Always stow it in a well ventilated place.

  • Don't leave your PFD on board for long periods when the boat is not in use.

  • Never dry your PFD on a radiator, heater or any other direct heat source.

  • Put your name on your PFD if only you wear it.

  • Practice throwing your Type IV PFD. Cushions throw best underhand.

  • Follow the washing instructions on the label.

  • Most PFD can be washed by hand in a mild detergent and hung to dry in a well ventilated area out of any direct sunlight.

70% of all boating fatality accidents result from drowning.
Almost 90% of those who drown are not wearing a life jacket!
