Connecticut Water Trails Program Kayak Basics Kayak Camping
You're paddling along a deserted coastline on a weeklong trip - no cars,
no people - just you, your companions and the picturesque scenery.
You've entered the world of kayak camping. You've become part of a
self-sufficient group of paddlers who can explore small islands,
deserted beaches, hidden coves, remote lakes and quiet waterways on
multi-day or weeklong trips.
A kayak camping trip can last overnight, or much longer, depending on
personal taste, and campsites can be reached through rivers, lakes, or
the open ocean. Properly preparing for a kayak camping trip is crucial,
and will make the experience more enjoyable. As you become more
experienced with kayak camping, you will learn about the gear that works
best for you, the climate, and the environment.
Camping out of your kayak is a very rewarding experience. Depending on
the trip, you'll need an adequate level of kayaking and navigational
skills. A seaworthy kayak, basic safety gear, navigational aids,
reliable camping gear and appropriate clothing will get you where you
want to go. Whether it's a weekend trip to The Thimble Island or a
weeklong trip down the Connecticut River, being well prepared is the key
to a successful adventure.
