Currently one of the fastest growing and most exhilarating water sports, surfski paddling offers athletes the chance to interact with the ocean to a degree that is just not possible in any other sport.

Currently one of the fastest growing and most exhilarating water sports, surfski paddling offers athletes the chance to interact with the ocean to a degree that is just not possible in any other sport.

Surfski paddling was first developed in Australian surf life saving clubs back in the early 1960's, the first craft being made of wood and very stable, providing a quick way of both getting to and rescuing tired swimmers. Before long they were racing them, with the craft getting progressively longer and sleeker over the years. Lifeguards in New Zealand, South Africa and the US also started using them for both rescue and racing.

The name itself is deceptive - ‘surfski' makes people think of wave skis or even jet skis. In reality they are, however, very sleek kayaks designed for racing in challenging salt water conditions. There are two main types: those designed for ocean racing, and those designed for inshore conditions in surf life saving competition.
