Site Location:   Coventry, Connecticut

Basic Information:

Eagleville Pond (80 acres) and its dam are a recreation area owned by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. The view and rushing sound of the whitewater falls can be enjoyed at either parking area.

Fishing is popular on the Mansfield side of the dam. There is a paved ramp for handicapped access to the top of the dam, where you can try your luck at fishing or just enjoy the view of the lake.

The Coventry side has a carry-in boat launch for canoes and kayaks, as well as small motor boats (8 mile-per-hour speed limit). No water skiing is allowed. Paddling to the upper lake is easiest from River Park in Mansfield. Check the Canoe and Kayak Map for details about the river and lake’s hazards, features and launch sites.

On The Water:

There are a lot of channels, islands, and coves to explore as well as the Willimantic River which comes in from the northern end. A railroad track runs parallel to the eastern shore.

The section of the Willimantic River which flows into the pond has very little current and a few riffles and shallow water which can make paddling difficult right before the Route 44 bridge.

Site History:

Eagleville Pond was created to store the river's water and provide a reliable source of water power to the former Eagleville Mill, which was located on the Mansfield side next to the dam. Now it is a popular recreation area. The dam's curtain of whitewater and scenic views of the lake make this a refreshing spot to relax and enjoy the views.

The lake offers flat-water paddling on open water, but wind can be a factor. Stay close to the west shore and be careful to avoid the dam, which is marked with buoys. The upper end of the lake offers meandering channels between low-lying islands. This area offers good opportunities to watch wildlife. Fishing for warm-water fish, such as large-mouth bass, is available either from a boat or from the Mansfield side of the dam.
