Take Out: Same As Put-In

On The Water: It can take a day or more just to explore the shoreline, every island, and the coves. Or you can paddle up one of the three rivers which feed into the lake - Mount Hope River, Natchuag River, and Fenton River.

Bassett Bridge Road divides the lake in half. The narrower section  the river below the Basset Road Bridge has more coves and islands to explore.

From the put-in paddle through  one of the two large steel culverts into the northeast section of the lower lake, where a hidden pond on the eastern side connects you to the main body of water through a channel.

If you choose you can carry into another larger pond towards the southeast section of the lake. When paddling in the southern end of the lake you'll pass a large dike and come to the Natchuag River inlet which you can paddle for a short distance up river..

The northern section of the lake is wider which does have a few coves which you can explore. There are two river inlets up here the Mount Hope River entering in from the north and the Fenton River entering in from the northeast.

Traveling up the Mount Hope River you'll come to a beaver lodge which blocks your way. You can paddle up the Fenton River under Route 89 for a longer distance.

Cautions: Water level fluctuates because this is a controlled reservoir.

Site History:

The lake was created using dams and dikes in 1956 by the US Army Corp of engineers in response to the flooding of Willimantic River in 1936.
