The Objective Of Connecticut Water Trails Month
To celebrate the vibrant and vital role of Connecticut’s Water Trails.
The overall mission is to:
Promote the sustainable use of the Connecticut Water Trails and to support efforts to restore and maintain its ecological integrity and let people know how they can get involved.
To celebrate the ecological, economic, and aesthetic value of water trails and to show ways in which people can work to preserve water trail environments as resources and places of inspiration.
Encourage collaboration among groups and individuals, focusing attention on the Connecticut Water Trails system in order to increase environmental awareness through education and celebration.
Work in cooperation with community groups, paddling clubs, towns, environmental organizations, businesses, agencies, and other individuals.

Join us on a guided canoe tour of the Charles Wheeler Salt March. Steeped in local history, the Marsh offers an abundance of birds and other wildlife, beautiful vistas and a chance to paddle and relax. Bring water and wear shoes that can get wet. Contact the Coastal Center for more information. Trip routes are subject to change due to weather. Essex Saturday, June 4, 2011 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Come explore Essex’s North Cove (a natural
embayment on the Connecticut River). Points of interest will include:
historic shipyard sites, historic Riverview Cemetery, extensive tidal
marshes, and the mouth of the Falls River. The 2-mile paddle will begin
at 10 a.m. and we will conclude with a bring-your-own-lunch picnic on
the lawn at the Connecticut River Museum (CRM). Life vests are required.
Meet Bill Yule and Jennifer White-Dobbs in front of the CRM to launch
kayaks/canoes at the Essex boat launch at the end of Main Street.

Sponsored by Eastern Mountain Sports June 25, 2011 Saugatuck River Public Boat Ramp in Westport Will be meeting at the Fairfield Store which
is 1939 Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield .This is a beginners kayak day
using our rental fleet. We will give a gear talk at the store at 10am
before we load the boats on to cars. This will also be a demonstration
as to how to put a boat on a car and when we get to our destination, a
how to take a boat off a car. We will be teaching a basic getting in and
out of a kayak and some important paddle strokes plus rescue techniques.
The cost to sign up is $50 which includes rental kayak, pfd paddle and
gear needed to carry a kayak on a car. If a person has their own kayak
the sign up fee will be $20 . We’ll be carpooling as best we can
,parking can be limited and we like to be as environmentally responsible
as possible. There is the possibility that we will have to use some of
the participants cars to get the kayaks to the river. We have 6 rental
kayaks and it will be a first come first serve basis. There will
be two Guides and the limit is 8 participants. Participants must be
appropriately dressed for a day on the water. Check list: Water shoes/sandals (no flip
flops), Swimsuit/shorts, Sun shirt ( or a good lathering of sunscreen),
Sun hat , Sunglasses with leash, Paddle gloves (optional), Bring

Forest/Pine Acres Pond. Join wildlife biologist Dale May for a canoe
trip on scenic 130+-acre Pine Acres Pond. We will look for wildlife and
aquatic plants and discuss the ecology of the pond. Canoes, paddles,
life vests, and instruction (for novices) will be provided, or bring
your own equipment. Wearing of flotation devices is required. Paddles
will begin about every hour on the hour between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and
last approximately45 minutes (2 miles). Sponsored by

Paddle June 4, 2011 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Take an easy flatwater trip with a canoe
or kayak from River Park to Eagleville Lake. There will be a choice
of a short or long (2 mile) roundtrip. Bring your own boat. A
limited number of kayaks will be available for rent prior to the
event at the Mansfield Community Center (MCC) for a nominal fee
(participants will be responsible for transporting the kayaks from
the MCC to River Park). Life Jackets required or all participants.
Bring water(and lunch if you like). Meet at the River Park parking

basics of paddling a kayak in a mild setting and at a relaxed pace.
Students will learn about kayaks, paddles, gear and clothing before
learning to launch and being introduced to the basic paddle strokes.
This class is a great way for those considering kayaking to try it

paddle. The adventure begins at Simonzi Park (Kennedy Drive, Putnam) and ends downstream at the Route 101 bridge (Pomfret). The first segment parallels Kennedy Drive and Interstate 395, so the sounds of civilization are part of the experience. Farther along, the river passes between agricultural fields and several gravel operations. This is a pleasant and beautiful stretch of the river. Expect current, some quick-water and flat-water, but no portages. It is an outing for paddlers who are comfortable with moving water. Sponsored by The Last Green Valley, Inc. 9:00 am to noon. Paddle For A Cure Saturday, June 11, 2011 It will be the same as a walk-a-thon BUT
WE WILL BE PADDLING not walking. All the money we raise will be
going to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT for The Oncology
Foundation. Organized by Five Mile Outfitters at 99 Commerce
Ave., Danielson, CT. Sign up on site at 9 am if not already
pre-registered. Paddle starts at 10 am. For every $50
raised you will get a raffle ticket for a FREE Vapor 10 XT Kayak -
limited Black Cherry color. Our goal is to get 100 paddlers.
If each paddler could ask 10 people for $10, we can raise $10,000

Kayaking 101 June 4, 2011 White Memorial, Litchfield Starting at 1 pm For persons that do not currently have a Kayak and would like to know more about to get into kayaking, this is a basic class to learn how to pick a kayak paddle, pick a paddles Safety equipment and Safe transport of kayaks and much more. The June class is followed by an hands on instructive guided paddle on the Bantam River, after the class participants are invited to try out paddling for the first time in a safe environment. All Kayak are provided by us along with Life Jackets and Paddles.
